Mandalo’s life shifted dramatically at age eight when a livestock accident caused a spinal injury that left him hospitalized for months. As he worked through a long and difficult recovery, his mother introduced him to beading to help strengthen his hands and focus his mind. That early spark of creativity grew into a refined skill, and in 2011 Mandalo joined Shanga. Today, his detailed beadwork reflects both his talent and his remarkable perseverance.

Founded in 2007 in the vibrant Nyamirambo neighborhood of Kigali, the Nyamirambo Women’s Center (NWC) is a Rwandan nonprofit dedicated to empowering women through education, skills training, and sustainable employment. What began as a small community initiative has grown into a thriving center where women learn, create, and build brighter futures for themselves and their families.

The artisans at NWC are skilled in sewing, weaving, embroidery, beading, and textile work. Many are mothers, community leaders, and survivors who have transformed their skills into sustainable livelihoods. Their craft is not just a source of income — it is a source of dignity, confidence, and connection.
